Misty Copeland was born in Kansas City Missouri and was brought up in San Pedro California. She began ballet at the age of 13, and from then on won many prizes and awards, including the music centre Spotlight prize. Just two years later, she won an award for a scholarship programme for the American Ballet theatre Summer Programme. A year later she joined the theatre school, Corps de Ballet. In 2015 she became the first African American woman to be the principal dancer. She has then gone on to win more awards in her field. In 2014 she made history by becoming the first black African/American to perform the role of Odette in Swan Lake.
She has featured in many magazines and TV programmes, such as Vogue and Good Morning america.She also holds endorsements for Dr Pepper, american Express and COACH. She has done a lot of charity work and volunteers her time and collaborates with the likes of Barack Obama. She has also ventured into the world of publishing by writing a book, A Life In Motion, and was given an honorary doctorate.
